My guest is romance author, Anne Elizabeth. Anne, welcome to Over Coffee! 

You write both for adults, such as the sexy action packed story, Once A Seal, and for teens. I found it interesting that you also write graphic novels. 

How did your Pulse of Power comic world come to be?

• It was created when I was in high school. I wrote several short stories as part of an assignment and [the stories] continued to grow through college and graduate school. Now the series is blooming with the main storyline and off-shoot journeys.

How has being published changed your life? In what ways?

• Being published has changed my life in many ways. I find myself walking around with a constant writing track in my head. It was happening before my books were released, but now there is direction and purpose and the words come faster. I also find I need to be attentive to how I write and what I’m working on. It’s hard to dial-out when the day is done, but it’s important to me to be present in my marriage and personal life. No wants a mate or friend that’s only half-there. Being whole is monumentally important.

What’s a hobby you enjoy?

• I hike, mountain bike, kayak, swim, volunteer for the California Parks, and do a multitude of outdoor sports. It’s fun to get my inner-athlete excited and I like to bring that love to sports and activities into my writing.

Does a hobby play into your writing?

• My hero and heroine are into the outdoors. They are engaged in their environment, which is also very typical of individuals living in Southern California. People spend a lot of time outdoors.

What temptation do you wish you could resist?

• Chocolate. I cannot decide if it’s evil or angelic.

Who is your real life hero and why?

• My real-life hero is my husband. He’s a retired Navy SEAL who continues to contribute to the community and teaches what he’s learned to others. His humbleness and thoughtfulness are two attributes that awe me, and that true kindness inspires me to face each day with joy in my heart.

What’s the last thing that made you laugh?

• I just watched an episode of The Neighbors. The Weavers were a BLT sandwich (Seriously, they were dressed as parts of a sandwich) and that image is seared into my brain. Anything that has aliens and/or humor is something I’m going to watch, read or collect.

What’s the last time you stopped and reflected and realized you’re happy just where you are?

• I like to hike. Oftentimes, I will sit and meditate or commune with the world around me. It was during one of these experiences I realized how blessed and grateful I am. 

If they made a movie of your life, what would it look like? What genre would it be? 

• If a movie could be made out of my life, I’d like to be animated. My characters from my PULSE OF POWER comic book world would be there and they’d be participating as well as narrating it. Everyone would concentrate on having fun and the only hard moments would be teachable moments and they would resonate with the audience. The ending would be a happily-ever-after and it would bring peace everywhere, national fiscal solutions, and solve world-hunger, too. Hey...a writer can dream. :)

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Why there?

• In Hawaii. My husband and I feel very connected to Oahu. The sand, the surf, the rhythm...it’s very peaceful.

I asked Sia what topic she wanted for this post and this is what she suggested:  

"Remember they don’t see us in our ratty jammies, torn jeans, growling and cursing at everything, or with no makeup, and our hair looking like a herd of horses ran through it. Thank God for that, right? They see you as your author pic shows you and the online personality you've developed.
 "To your readers you’re a glamorous author. Okay, quit laughing," she wrote. 

I was laughing, because glamorous means exciting and desirable and my life is anything but exciting or desirable.

I live in an old house in constant need of repair, go barefoot in the summer, and wear socks, sometimes several pairs, all winter. And yes, I write in my nightgown. Sometimes I'm so caught up in the process, it's afternoon when a knock at the door reminds me I'm half naked, still have bed head, and have forgotten to eat! Almost daily, I pick up socks from the living room floor, a discarded pair of jeans from a kitchen chair, and underwear from the most curious of places. My hubby has a habit of shedding clothes as soon as he walks in the door, and since I love him, I don't nag, at least not any more. He has to deal with my writing moods, and that's an even exchange for sure.

Just recently, I helped my son take an air conditioner out of his window and capture stinkbugs by the dozens as they sought the warmth of our house for shelter and hibernation. The word yuck, doesn't describe the chasing down of the little buggers or the smell if you accidentally touch them, and don't even consider smashing them. Their odor is almost worse than a skunks. We captured them in empty plastic bottles, where they suffocate in their own bouquet. Getting rid of stinkbugs is a horrid job and one that gives me the heebie-jeebies, simply because bugs are just so, so gross!

Does any of that sound exciting or desirable? Yet many folks see it all another way. I did too, once, after all authors are revered, not as much a rock stars or some movie stars (if you measure it by screaming hordes of fans) but they do appear as guests on television talk shows, act as consultants on movie shoots,  and the more successful ones have bank accounts in the millions. The pinnacle of success, money in the bank, and while it's a dream we all share, it's a vision few of us will achieve.

I'll bet the life of most writers is not far from mine. Therefore, while the life of a few of the most successful authors may be glamorous, most of us are just regular folk.

Although occasionally, something cool does happen, and it touches the ego, right where a writers ego needs to be touched. Just this week I handed a very nice lady my business card and a bookmark for my most recent release. I asked to speak to the manager, and told her about my book, and that I wanted to arrange a book signing. She gushed, and I do mean gush.

"Oh my gosh, you're an author. Really! It's so exciting to meet an author."

And I'm like, "It's so nice to meet someone who thinks so." I laughed, but it was.

At our favorite restaurant the other night, the cashier says to me. "Are you that book lady?"

So for me, in between scrubbing toilets, dusting, vacuuming, and laundry, I keep trying to convince folks that I've written a book they can't live without, therefore, while glamour would be nice, it's certainly not reality!

I'll know I've arrived the day I can hire someone else to do the mundane for me! I know, keep dreaming, but if all I get from my glamorous writing life is to be known as that book lady, I'll take it!

Yolanda Renée really wanted to be a drummer, or a racecar driver. Obviously she's neither, but they are on her bucket list, that, and owning her very own fire breathing dragon!

Renée claims to have always loved books, and that it was through books that she escaped and experienced all the things she'd only been able to dream about. Through the stories, the characters, and the places created by talented authors, such as Caroline Keene, Margaret Mitchell, and Stephen King. Renée says she's always been a writer, and that making things up gets her through the day - a crazy imagination is a good thing - right?

An adventurous spirit took Yolanda Renée to Alaska where she hiked the Brooks Range, traveled from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, and learned to sleep under the midnight sun.

She claims her vivid imagination as a blessing, a habit, a hobby, a calling and sometimes a curse.

Renée now resides in Central Pennsylvania with her husband, two sons, and Boston terrier, Patches.

MONDAY MUSINGS—MAKING THE CUT (IWSG)

It started out a thread of gossamer brushing my mind. Little sparkles of ideas catching my mind’s attention. Intriguing snatches of characters in my dreams coalescing into story pieces and captivating my imagination with possibilities. I could see where the characters came from and how they got to this world and the source of their power as well as the eventual goal of the story and characters but there were pieces missing. 

I knew I needed research to flesh out the world a bit. I've got pages of research on various aspects of mythology and gemstones but how to pull it all together became the issue.

 I have this huge gorgeous sweep of fabric to work with but what about these other equally lovely and rich pieces of material? I want to use them, too. How do I combine them all into a whole piece? I have most of the picture in my mind of what I want but where and how do I place the pattern pieces? I've pinned them this way and that but haven’t made the cut yet.

My indecision drives me nuts.

 

I have two sets of characters clear in my mind. I've decided to work with those pieces first. I've decided to do smaller character stories or sketches and let them help me define the parameters of this new world.

My insecurities are showing up big time. Maybe I’m doing it all backwards? Perhaps. I already know this story is going to pull me out of my comfort zone and stretch my writing skills. I have to start somewhere or walk away. I’m not inclined to walk away so, I’m writing.

On one hand that scares me spitless and on the other hand...it's exciting.

MARY WINE—COFFEE, COOKIES, AND HISTORICAL COSTUMES

Mary Wine has been a guest several times here Over Coffee. I thought it would be nice to learn a bit more about her beyond writing good stories. For one, she's a talented seamstress. You can click on any of the pictures to get a closer view of costumes made by Mary.

How has being published changed your life? In what ways?

This is going to sound strange but it’s given meaning to a large part of me that I really questioned. These stories are there, in my mind and very real to me. Being able to write them down and actually have someone else be interested in reading them is flat out….amazing. There is no way to really express to people how much of a jolt it gives me to have someone come up and talk to me about my characters. I mean, those crazy hatchlings of my imagination.

Did you try other genres before you hit with this one?

As far as romance, no. I’m the girl who waited with baited breath for Han Solo to kiss Princess Leia and snuck my first Johanna Lindsey book home from the super market when I was about thirteen. At least I thought I snuck it home. Seems that my mom knew about the book but my reading grades had always been low, so she decided that at least I was reading. I love many types of genres but that is really one of the great things about Romance, you can be writing a para-normal or a historical or a suspense.

How has associating with other writers helped you?

Let’s me know that while I am insane, at least I’m not alone.

How important is belonging to a writing group, such as RWA, to an aspiring or published author?

I find it very important. I go out to my yearly conferences and do a lot of fact gathering and skill polishing. I think your writing can get stale if you don’t get out and polish up the skills.

What does your writing day look like?

I get up with the rest of the family and sit down at my desk. I feel one of the biggest mistakes writers make is forgetting to treat their writing like a job. Discipline is key.

Describe your writing space. Or, describe your DREAM writing space.

My current writing space in in my sewing room. My dream space would be far away from the living room, or as I tend to call it, the temple of the Xbox. I would like to have a bigger space but all I really need is my computer.

How do you refresh and recharge yourself so you can continue writing?

I tend to sew something between books. Working at the sewing machine sort of clears the deck it seems. If I’m having writers block, I go sew and it usually clears right up.

Paint me a picture, with words, of a perfect day?

I love cruise ships. I’ll hang out on the rail and enjoy the open ocean. Up in Alaska, the Hubbard Glacier is a favorite of mine. I’ll stand on that deck, squeezed in with three hundred other people, some of them wearing their bathrobes in an attempt to get another layer on them in the chill and listen to that glacier. It’s amazing.

What’s a hobby you enjoy?  

Sewing. But in particular, I sew historical clothing. I own a bustle and wear it. I love to find pictures of clothing from eras gone by and recreate them and find reasons to wear them.

Does your hobby play into your writing?

Yes. If you’re reading one of my historical’s…I've worn those dresses.

How has your own romance colored how you write romance in your stories?

I am married to a wonderful man…who puts up with me. In fact, we met at a renaissance faire. He was in a suit of armor and I was wearing a court dress.

What temptation do you wish you could resist?

I don’t think I've ever met a cookie I didn't like.

Who is your real life hero?

Nuns and anyone able to dedicate their life completely to helping others for no reward. Only the basics. It’s such a selfless act. I also really admire vegetarians. I wish I had the self-control to become one.

What’s the last thing that made you laugh?

Listening to my husband yell at the Xbox game he’s playing while I’m writing this. I have never played online games and it cracks me up to hear him and my sons getting so worked up….”What the hell do you mean!!!!”   “*%^$# Sniper!!!”

When’s the last time  you stop and reflected and realized you’re happy just where you are?

I do this often. I am very grateful for what I have, for every book contract I am offered and for every person who takes the time to email me.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Why there?

I would love to go someplace I am not allowed. A place rich in history that perhaps isn't open to the public. Like the Tower of London, the areas not on the tour. The great pyramids of Egypt, the country is simply too unstable right now to go there. The Vatican, in the archives. I’d love to walk on the beach in the Antarctica and see the penguins, maybe I’ll get to do this one. If I were given a chance to live somewhere, I’d love to try different cultures for a few months at a time. What would it be like to be a Japanese’s woman, an Indian woman, A Greek or a hundred others. Wouldn't it be grand to experience all of these different cultures through something that we have in common like celebrating birthday parties? I think it would be smashing.

DONNA GRANT GIVES US THE 411 ON: IMMORTAL HIGHLANDERS & DRAGON KINGS

I remember the day I first learned about today's guest, Donna Grant.

I was talking to a friend of mine, who was a bookseller, about how broad the scope of paranormal could be but seemed to be stuck in vampire stories.  I didn't want bloodsuckers I wanted dangerous kick ass warriors, with flaws, battling their darkness within while battling against evil with a sense of honor.   “Snap! I know an author you would love. She writes Celtic themes and recently sold to a major publisher. Wait, I have the book here…” the phone clunked on the counter. “Donna Grant and Dangerous Highlander!”  She read me the blurb…I was sold then and still am. I had Donna on my blog (Dark Swords and Druids) a few weeks later.

For those unfamiliar with my Dark Warriors series, let me tell you a bit about it. 

The Warriors are a group of Highlanders who are the greatest warriors of their family.  By being so, they carry within their blood primeval gods that once unbound, not only make them immortal, but give the Highlanders enhanced abilities and special powers.  They also transform by way of claws and fangs, but also each god has a color, so the Highlanders turn the color of their god when that god is released.  IOW, when those Warriors are ready for battle. J

There are so many legends and myths of Scotland that it’s hard to know what was real and what wasn't   So, when I began the series, I developed a legend of my own: What if Rome was driven out of Britain by magic?

And by magic I mean Druids.  Two sects actually (good and bad).  It’s the evil Druids who call up the primeval gods from Hell, but it takes both sects to bind the gods inside the men.  Until my first villain, centuries later, sets the gods free once more in her bid to take over the world.

Deirdre is the perfect villain in my Dark Sword series, but when the series time traveled to modern day Scotland, I knew I had to add another twist.  Welcome Declan Wallace, a new kind of villain that takes my Warriors by surprise. Declan, however, wasn’t enough. There’s a new villain in town – Jason Wallace - and he is going to come at the Warriors and Druids sideways.

           

Wait, your saying.  Time travel?  Yep.  The series began in 2009 with DANGEROUS HIGHLANDER, a historical paranormal set in medieval Scotland.  After six book in the DS series, my guys decided to throw me a twist and time travel. My love was historicals.  I’d dipped my toes in contemporaries with a novella and one time travel, but not an entire book.

My publisher asked me to keep the Warriors in modern time, so there would be no going back for me. L  Yet, when I sat down to write MIDNIGHT’S MASTER (the first Dark Warrior book), I found the idea of taking these alpha, immortal Highlanders into contemporary Scotland thrilling.

All is not fun and games, however, because the storyline that began in the Dark Sword series continues in the Dark Warriors.  There are still villains to fight, evil to battle, and love to find.

It’s been a lot of fun taking each Warrior’s power and using it for - or against - him.  To add to the conflict, their heroines are Druids who each hold a special type of magic.  With the Warriors being such strong, rugged men, their heroines have to be just as stalwart to be able to stand beside them. 

It’s bitter sweet that I’m now promoting MIDNIGHT’S PROMISE, the last full length book in the Dark Warrior series.  I know many have been anxiously and not so patiently waiting for Malcolm’s book.  Malcolm first showed up in FORBIDDEN HIGHLANDER (Dark Sword book 2) and his story took one drastic turn after another.

I’m not having to say good-bye to my Warriors and Druids, however. There’s one more Dark Warrior story, a holiday novella featuring a Warrior I had thought died – Dale.  Read his story in MIDNIGHT’S SURRENDER (Nov 5, 2013).

Even then the Warriors and Druids will still be around, playing large roles in the upcoming spin off series the Dark Kings featuring my shape-shifting hunks, the Dragon Kings starting with the novella bind-up titled DARK HEAT (Dec 31, 2013) before moving on to DARKEST FLAME (April 29, 2014) and FIRE RISING (June 3, 2014).

Donna, I was glad to feature the first of these warriors in Dangerous Highlander and I'm glad to be featuring the last of these warrior's stories today with Midnight's Promise. I've enjoyed the adventure! I'm looking forward to Dark Kings series and another aspect of the magic of old--dragons!

MONDAY MUSINGS—LEAF FALL

This past weekend we had leaf fall. Kinda like snowfall only with leaves. It’s amazing to watch.

Two days before leaf fall we mowed the lawns and it still had the look of summer with only a touch of color. In the backyard we have a row of Walnut trees, which are usually one of the first to lose their leaves as the nights become longer, and a few maples. There had been very little loss of leaves.

Saturday night we had our first hard frost. As the sun rose everything was sparkling and then the sunlight hit the backyard trees. The leaves started falling like snow. In a matter of hours all the walnut trees were bare and half of the silver maple trees had lost their leaves as well. What was once a bare lawn now has a carpet of leaves two inches thick. You hear the leaves fall, too. There’s a soft snapping and crackling as the leaves release and then fall to the ground. My husband and I took our coffee out on the breezeway and sat on the steps leading down to the backyard and watched. It’s an amazing sight.

I didn't do a video of the leaf fall but this short video show what it looks and sounds like when it happens. It’s only one walnut tree dropping leaves and I had five trees and two silver maples. I also had several of my pride of cats out there chasing the leaves. They had a great time. J

THE ZOMBIES ARE COMING

October is a month of nasties comin' at you. Vampires, ghouls, ghosts, Freddy Kruegar, and the host of pint-sized pixies, princesses, and super heroes invading your neighborhood and pounding on your door. 

And then there are zombies... 

My guest is zombie aficionado and author, Dana Fredsti, who wrote Plague Town about a tough and sexy zombie hunter, Ashley Parker. Ashley is also smart and sassy mouthed--reminds me of a certain author I know. Plague Nation is book number two in the series. 

Dana talks a bit about zombies in movies and history.  

I’m sure most of you probably know at least one, if not more, people like me. You know, the friend you invite to dinner who, instead of appreciating the spectacular view from that big old picture window in your living room, lectures you about the impossibility of boarding it up efficiently when the zombies come. 

 

Yeah, I’m that person. And it used to be there weren't very many of us; just a relatively small fringe group of people given to eye-balling his or her surroundings at any given moment, planning just what we’d do if the zombie apocalypse should happen to start right then and there.  We were like a small, select club, but instead of a secret handshake we’d all laugh knowingly when someone else said, “Yeah, they’re dead. They’re all messed up.” 

 

Now you can’t turn around without running into zombie savvy civilians.  Over the last few years zombies have taken over publishing, movies, television and pop culture as relentlessly as they've overrun farmhouses and malls in George Romero’s films. Even the CDC has gotten into the rotting, shambling spirit of things.  Some people are proclaiming zombies are the “new vampire” (and if, by “new vampire” they mean zombies are the currently the monster du jour for film and literature, I take their point. I don’t, however, see them taking over as romantic heroes, sparkling or otherwise).  Others state that zombies have already “jumped the shark” and are on their way out, end of story.  Not likely, says I.  People like me have been waiting a long time for enough zombie fodder to satisfy our appetites. 

 

Not that the concept of a zombie apocalypse is new.  There are references to the flesh eating dead in the Epic of Gilgamesh, perhaps the oldest surviving work of literature.  And one has only to take a peek at a few choice passages in the bible to see that the dead returning to life is not a new theme.

 

Throughout history most cultures have had, if not precisely zombies as we've come to define them (i.e. reanimated corpses with a voracious appetite for human flesh), assorted critters close enough for government work: vengeful reanimated corpses called revenants (think Creepshow's  "I want my cake!" segment); nachzehrers and gjengangers (ghouls that feed on corpses, but also attack the living and spread disease); and the Norse draugr (dead Vikings who attack, eat and infect the living). 

 

Haitian folklore brought us the "zombi" (which translates as "spirit of the dead"), in the form of either an animated corpse or living human controlled by a Bokor (voodoo priest) after being zapped with a nasty toxic powder called "coup poudre." These zombies didn't eat human flesh, but they were still creepy.  Early movies like White Zombie, I Walked with a Zombie, and the '80s film Serpent and the Rainbow featured this relatively benign incarnation of the walking dead.

 

George Romero's 1968 release Night of the Living Dead brought us the classic (and now ubiquitous) slow, but relentless flesh-eating zombies. Subsequent films/books/games/television have since brought us more slow zombies; zombies that could win gold medals for sprinting; smart zombies (Day of the Dead); brain-eating zombies (Return of the Living Dead); shark fighting zombies (Zombie Flesh Eaters); funny zombies (Shaun of the Dead/Zombieland); pathetic zombies (Zombie Honeymoon); and sensitive zombies (Fido). And yes, oh well, Summer Blockbuster Zombies that can only be defeated by Brad Pitt.   

Reasons for the zombacalypse range from exploding space probes, biological warfare, demonic possession, tainted meat, mutating viruses/bacterial nasties, biblical prophecy, and more.  And now, thanks to The Walking Dead (AMC) and Dead Set (BBC), zombies have successfully infiltrated network television. 

And I couldn't be more delighted to invite them into my home. :-)
