Strong Secondary Characters Rock

Tawny Weber is my guest today. She tells fun stories with lots of little extras that make the story feel real. One of the things I enjoy in any book is good secondary characters. Tawny discusses her view of secondary characters and why they are important to a story.

Writing a new book always means getting to know a lot of characters.  Not only the hero and heroine, but all the rest of the cast that creates their world.  In my February Blaze, A SEAL’s Seduction, Blake and Alexia are clearly the stars.   They were two characters who came, fully formed, into my head.  Both with distinct emotional baggage, with strong personalities and even stronger opinions.  But oftentimes I think it’s the secondary characters who provide the most interesting contrasts for our stars.

Secondary characters are the means to which readers get to know our stars.  Through those friendships, family relationships, adversarial jousts, etc, the reader sees first hand who this person is and how they handle life.  Which is one reason I often include pets in my stories.  I think how a person reacts and interacts with animals, small children and the elderly shows more about their character than pages of introspection.

A SEAL’s Seduction is peppered with strong secondary characters.  Michael, Alexia’s brother is so fun. The only son of an Admiral, he’s the headliner of a gay burlesque show and male model.  And he’s a sweetie.  Cute and upbeat, he’s faced the similar emotional challenges as his sister, but he has a very different way of dealing with them.  He is a wonderful contrast for Alexia, and works really well to show her soft side and help the reader understand why she’d make the decisions she did growing up.

And then there are the Admiral and Mrs. Pierce.  They were SO fun to write.  Uptight and rigid on the surface, with a deep love of their children that both the reader, and their children, don’t see at first.  As is often the case with parents, it’s their behavior, both past and present, which define the heroine’s beliefs.  Her rules, her fears and her standards come from the history she has with her parents.

But my absolute favorite of all the secondary characters in A SEAL’s Seduction is Lieutenant Commander Cade Sullivan, Call sign: Slick.  Cade’s hot.  He’s sexy and sweet, he’s a leader.  He’s the high school football quarterback, prom king, class president and sweetie who tutored young kids on the downlow.  Like most SEALs, he’s driven.  Powerful and strong, with a clear view of his purpose in life and a devotion to duty that’s unbeatable.  And did I mention that he’s hot?  Whew!  So hot.

Cade is technically Blake’s boss.  He, Blake and Phil were best friends since their BUDs training days, nicknamed the Three Amigos because they were always together.  They even ended up a part of the same SEAL team.   It was while Cade was leading a standard mission that Phil was killed.  Like Blake, the loss of his best friend hits Cade hard.  And like Blake, that loss becomes a major driving force in how Cade views his career, his life and his choices.

There was such a wonderful contrast between these two heroes, yet they are so much alike.  Both are emotionally wounded from their childhood, both are gorgeous and sexy and both are SEALs.  Powerful, strong and determined.

So while I really did love so many of the other secondary characters in A SEAL’s Seduction, Cade is definitely my favorite.  Which comes in handy, as I wrote him his very own love story as soon as I finished A SEAL’s Seduction.  Titled A SEAL’s Surrender, is out in just about a week (March, 2013).

  • How often do you read a story and fall for one of the secondary characters?  Are there some that you just HAVE to read their story?

LOVE IS IN THE AIR: HOT READS FOR A COLD WINTER'S NIGHT

I've found some yummy books to read by the fire this week. Hey, this is the week of romance, flowers, chocolate, and love. This week's selections cover a pretty wide range but all are worth the read.

THE SECOND CHANCE CAFE
Alison Kent

Growing up, Kaylie Flynn was shuffled from foster home to foster home before being welcomed into Winton and May Wise’s family. It was May who taught Kaylie the comfort of home, and the healing power of baking the perfect brownie. Years later, May leaves Kaylie the money she needs to open her own cafĂ© in the charming Victorian they once shared. Now back in Hope Springs, Kaylie’s determined to finally make all her dreams a reality—and unearth answers to lingering questions about her past.

Soon, however, Kaylie’s carefully laid plans take an unexpected turn. The house needs far more work than she realized, and Tennessee Keller, the carpenter Kaylie hires, is proving to be a very handsome and very unneeded distraction from her quest to uncover the truth about her parents. When a crisis threatens to destroy everything she’s worked so hard to build, Kaylie must decide where her heart lies: with the ghosts of her past or the love and promise of her future. Excerpt

I always enjoy a well put together and layered read. This story by Alison Kent fits the bill for that and adds a good love story, sprinkles how past experiences--especially when we're young--can impact our life in the present and the choices we make. Plus, Alison shares some fabulous brownie recipes. I loved some of her secondary characters like Luna, Mitch, and Dolly (I'd love to see where the last two end up). The story kept me glued to the pages and the ending...well, Alison added the perfect touch. Well worth picking up and reading. I'm looking forward to other stories set in Hope Springs, Texas (I also enjoyed the clever pay on cliches such as 'hope springs' and where this cafe is located).

I've made no secret of the fact I love Tawny Weber's stories for Blaze  and for a lot of reasons. She tells a great story, her characters feel real and the heroines are spunky and sassy, and I love her dialog and she's very, very good with dialog. Her books fun and sexy (without the detailed sex by-play of erotic romance), they make me laugh, and I love the way she layers in issues without detracting from the overall story. Best of all, you gotta love a happy-ever-after-ending. Or, at least I do.
This one adds a serious thread of danger which showcases what SEALS do, then there is the whole family issues type of danger, and there are some great secondary characters. I love Michael and Cade is just delicious (can't wait to read his story next month). Speaking of happy endings, A SEALS Seduction, has the perfect ending, in my opinion. I laughed!

If you like your stories young and sweet and short, you might enjoy Rachel Morgan's YA Novella.
THE FAERIE GUARDIAN
Rachel Morgan

Protecting humans from dangerous magical creatures is all in a day's work for a faerie training to be a guardian. Seventeen-year-old Violet Fairdale knows this better than anyone--she's about to become the best guardian the Guild has seen in years. That is, until one of her assignments--a human boy who shouldn't even be able to see her--follows her into the fae realm. Now she's broken Guild Law, a crime that could lead to her expulsion.
The last thing Vi wants to do is spend any more time with the boy who got her into this mess, but the Guild requires that she return Nate to his home and make him forget everything he's discovered of the fae realm. Easy, right? But Nate and Vi are about to land themselves in even bigger trouble--and it'll take all Vi's training to get them out alive.
I'll be the first to admit, I rarely read YA. Having said that, I'll also say that I have read a few good ones. I was curious about Rachel's story and since she's one of my blogging buddies and I love the cover, I wanted to read her work (I do manage to do that with many of my blogging buddies).

I found the story to be a good read. Nice flow to the story and the characters are easily pictured, the dialog fits the generation (and I usually have a houseful of members from this generation at any given time). Rachel skillfully hooks her reader in the opening and keeps you moving forward because you want to see what happens. Her world is surprisingly well developed considering it's a novella. The Faerie world had a bit of the feel of what I loved about Hogwarts but without the darkness of that particular series storyline. I liked the attraction between Nate and Vi. Secondary characters like Tora added the right spice to the mix and Ryn...Yeah, he needs a smack upside the head.

I'll be reading the next installment of this series--not because Rachel is my blogging buddy (that only gets the first book read), but because she tells a very good story.

AND A GOOD CUP OF COFFEE!

Valentines Treats With Tawny Weber

Okay, I know it’s only the 3rd, and Valentine’s Day is 11 whole days away.  But hey, it was just July last week and as soon as I blinked, I was taking down the Christmas tree.  Did time fly for you, too?  Or was it just me?  Either way, I figure I’d better get focused on Valentine’s now!

You’d think Valentines is an easy holiday, right?  It’s pretty well defined as a Romantic Holiday (oooh, I love romantic holidays!) Heck, from grade school when we exchange cartoon greetings in white paper bags colored in red and purple crayon (again, was that just me?) to the jewelry commercials flooding the networks right now, the message is clear...  Valentine’s Day is a big deal.

And I know this.

So why am I coming up blank and struggling to think of a gift or fun way to celebrate???!!!!  (picture me pulling my hair out, because that’s what I want to do whenever I try and think about it.  You can see why I need 11 days to figure this out, right?)

Now we do have some traditions.  My husband always gets the girls and I each a box of Sees chocolates.  I always make his favorite dinner that night, even if we do a dinner out together a different night (reservations and crowds are always a pain on Valentines, so we usually do another night the same week).  Usually he brings me flowers.  Always I make him a card.

And always I struggle to come up with some gift or celebration idea that will tell him how much I love him.  Or what it is I love about him.  Or make him feel loved.  Or amused.  Or wishing he’d bought me diamonds.

The problem is, I’ve never come up with that perfect gift.  I’ve come up with some pretty good ones, though.   I’ve gone the chocolate route, and even baked my husband a giant heart shaped chocolate chip cookie.  I’ve made sassy gift certificates; one year I got him a teddy bear.  But I’m tapped out.  I have no idea what to give him this year.

Ack!   11 days!!!  If I’m going to make something, I have to get started.  If I’m going to buy something, I have to get shopping.  If I’m going to cop out, I really should chill.

Hmm... Well, whining aside and as much trouble as I make it, I do love Valentine's Day. So much so that I wanted to end my Under cover Ops series with a Valentine's wedding. Now that's romantic, right?

Well, it is if you ignore that the best man is home under FBI duress, his 'girlfriend' is an agent, out to bust his father, and his brother is now the town sheriff...

Available: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, eHarlequin
SEX, LIES AND VALENTINES
Con artist Gabriel Black just got busted. By a babe. Drool-worthy (and clearly sneaky) FBI agent Danita Cruz is forcing Gabriel to choose between hard time and scamming his own family for an undercover sting. Now he has to present Danita to his family as his girlfriend. And it's the perfect opportunity to get wickedly even with her....
But Danita has some tricks of her own, and Gabriel's control begins slipping away as raw sexual energy takes over. Their sham relationship starts feeling a lot like...well, the real deal. The Big Question is, will overwhelming desire be enough to make a liar go legit?

Here’s a peek at Gabriel’s first day back in Black Oak, just after he hears the news of his brother’s upcoming marriage: Except

Yeah... I think there’s plenty of romance to be had on Valentine’s Day. J

So, how about you?

  • Are you a fan of Valentine’s celebrations?
  • Any clever gift ideas or fun ways to enjoy the holiday I can add to my list of maybes?
  • And do you have a favorite Valentine’s memory?

TAWNY WEBER: A Kiss Is Still A Kiss.

Tawny Weber is visiting us with a fun topic—kisses. There are all sorts of kisses. Moms give them out regularly. We kiss our pets, our friends,  boo-boos to make them well, a quick peck as a goodbye to family. Our fairy tales speak of magical kisses that awaken the princess or turn a frog into a prince. There are devotional kisses —such as many Catholics do when making the sign of the cross. Knights kissed their lady fair's hand. The French kiss their fingers in appreciation of good food, or for something excellent c'est magnifique! Not to be confused with French kissing, which is usually considered intimate, romantic, or sexual.

Let's not forget kisses under the mistletoe or at the stroke of midnight on New Years, which brings me to Tawny's contribution (you get to contribute at the end):

Ten-Nine-Eight-Seven-Six-Five-Four-Three-Two-One and... Kaboom!  It’s kissing time.

Happy New Years!!!!

Oh, sure, that midnight chime means other things.  Welcoming a new year.  Resolution time.  A clean slate.  Tooty horns and confetti.  Champagne toasts.  You know, all the fun things about changing to a new calendar.

But New Year’s kisses got me thinking about all those other special kisses.

First kisses – I was seven when I had my first kiss. He was the preacher’s grandson and so cute!  He was also my first date, since he (and his grandma) took me to see Disney’s Robin Hood.

Wedding kisses – “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”  How often did I dream of those words growing up?  Pretty often, actually.  I played that scene out with my Barbie and my brother’s Frankenstein doll (Hey, he was alpha!)  so often, but it was nowhere near as wonderful as the real thing.  And while I wasn’t able to pry the photo of my wedding kiss out of the album to scan it, I did have this one on my hard drive.

Tawny and her husband

Which brings me to the next kiss on my list...

Storybook kisses (not hot sexy storybooks, though – that’d be a totally different blog post. Or, well, hey, I have a few you can check out if you’d like J SEX, LIES AND MIDNIGHT is out now and it’s chock full of sexy story kisses!).  The romantic, deep sigh inducing kind of kisses in fairytales and historical romance novels. These storybook kisses are the ones that reel us in first, which makes us believe in romance and sigh at the sweet, gentle promise they offer.

And then there are the sexy kisses.  The first time you kiss a particular person and know, just know, you have to see what comes next (pun unintended, but it made me grin so I’ll keep it there). There is an early episode of my favorite TV show, Friends, where the gang is all talking about kissing vs sex. The guys compared sex to seeing Pink Floyd in concert, and the kiss to the comedian opening act. The girls  explained that everything you need to know about a guy is in that first kiss. I’d have to agree. Whether it’s in real life, or in a book!

Okay, since I mentioned it, I should share a kiss from SEX, LIES AND MIDNIGHT, right?  So this isn’t Maya and Simon’s New Year’s Eve kiss (they were otherwise occupied at midnight on NYE  J ) but this is their first kiss...
~*~*~

Triumph was so close, Simon could taste it.
            But...
His gaze traveled down over her body, noting that she once again wore a dress that covered her from neck to mid-thigh, yet screamed hot and sexy.  The way the midnight blue fabric draped and hugged her curves made his fingers itch to see if the fabric was soft enough to touch that glorious flesh.
No.  Even though his hardening body screamed in protest, he put on the mental brakes.  That wasn't a road he was going down.  She was a case.  A tool at the most.  Sexy, gorgeous and apparently fun, but still means to an end.
She was so damned hard to resist.  Telling himself it was all in the name of the job, he took her hands again, lifting them both to his mouth.  He brushed soft kisses over her silky knuckles, then placed her hands, palms flat, against his shoulders.
“I need to get this out of the way,” he said quietly.  “It’s got nothing to do with the deal, and everything to do with how I’m feeling.”
She shook her head, looking like she wanted to protest.  But instead her fingers dug into his shoulders.
Hips brushing a tempting invitation against hers, his hands smoothed down the tiny curve of her waist to the sweet roundness of her hips.  Her breath shuddered, just a little.  Simon almost groaned aloud.  She was so delicious.  Was the reality of her as tasty as the promise?
Totally forgetting his plan—hell, his own name—Simon pulled her closer, so their bodies were close.  So close, but not quite touching.  Her warm scent wrapped around him like its own caress, making his mouth water, his dick harden.
Crazy, he thought, as he leaned down to take her mouth with his.
Their lips brushed, soft and sweet.  Just this side of innocent.  Safe, he told himself.  A Happy Holidays kind of kiss.  Totally acceptable.
Then she made this tiny sound.  Somewhere between a purr and a growl, deep in her throat.
            And he lost it.
His mouth took hers.  His tongue slipped between her full lips, taking hers in a dance as old as time.  He coaxed, he battled, he challenged.  And damned if she didn’t do exactly the same.
Simon’s body screamed in pleasure.  Passion, way out of line for such a simple kiss, demanded release.  His muscles tensed as he forced himself to not grab her and find a dark corner to explore just how good this could get.
Having to grab control before he went over the edge, he pulled his mouth from hers.  Her eyes were closed; thick dark lashes curving over the tops of her cheeks.  She took a deep breath and slowly lifted those lashes.
Absolutely crazy.  Breathless, Simon stared into her deep, golden eyes and wondered if she was the answer to his prayers.  Or the curse that would finally take him down.
~*~*~*~

So... c’mon, sharsies.

  • Did you have a wonderful New Year’s kiss to welcome 2012 into your life?
  • And what kiss stands out as your absolute favorite that you've ever read?
  • And which special kiss do you think has the most lasting impression on someone’s life?

SEX, LIES, AND THE WICKED TAWNY WEBER

It's been one of those mornings--have a cup?

My guest is romance author, Tawny Weber. I don't think it's a secret that I enjoy Tawny's books. I do believe I've read them all. They're a lot of fun and so is Tawny Weber.

I recently had a chance to read the second book in her Undercover Operatives, Sex Lies And Midnight. It's fun, engrossing, and dayum, it's HAWT! Did I mention sexy? Especially these men in the Black family—even the patriarch himself (who isn't in a real relationship—just sayin’).

If you enjoy a light read that gives you a break from all the jobs you have, this is the series to read and enjoy. It makes you laugh, the characters make you drool and have to fight off covetousness, but you walk away refreshed and ready to tackle the day. J

The premise of the series is a single father, Tobias Black, con artist extraordinaire, who successfully raise three extra-ordinary children after the death of his wife. They all have unique skills but a situation develops that rips the family apart. They’ve all gone their separate ways and have been estranged from their father ever since.  Tobias has some crafty ideas for getting them back home and allow for healing. He’s playing a dangerous game because his enemies are circling and he’s the target. Or are they? Let’s just say, Mr. Black has some interesting contacts (I’d LOVE to see his story).

The second story involves Maya Black. She’s lovely and exotic—when she isn’t trying to be dull as dishwater. She’s left the wild life and computer crime behind her, along with her father.  Family ties are strong and while she has been deeply hurt by her father, when he’s in danger she’s willing to fight, and fight dirty, to keep him out of jail.

Ah, but in this story, nothing is as it appears to be, least of all Maya and her *stand-in* boyfriend. Let the undercover games begin and boy do they! This story is fast paced, characters are distinct and all seem to have a hidden agenda.

I seriously love the premise of this series. I'd love to see it continue and tell Tobias' story and romance, and tell the delectable Hunter's story. Now there's an intriguing character. You gotta write it Tawny!

BE SURE TO STOP BY NEXT WEDNESDAY WHEN TAWNY WILL BE SHARING KISSES WITH US. IT WILL BE FUN TO SEE WHAT SHE COMES UP WITH. :-)

Born into a con artist family, Maya Nicholas abandoned the grifting life to live on the straight and narrow (and somewhat dull) years ago. But when her family is threatened—and the swindlers are on the verge of becoming the swindled— Maya swings into action. All she needs is a stand-in boyfriend, and the charming, tasty-as-sin Simon Barton will do quite nicely, thanks.

But Simon has a little lie of his own. He's FBI, and Maya is his inside track to her less-savory relations. It's a mutual using, which quickly turns into a scorching mutual attraction.

In fact, their naughty little sexcapades are the only things they aren't faking! Excerpt

Holiday Stories: CASSIE'S CHRISTMAS WISH

I've had so many lovely stories contributed this holiday season. I hope you've enjoyed them all. At the end of this story I will give you the links to each story again. In the hustle and bustle of getting prepared for the holidays and family, not many had time to really do much but extra reading.

This Holiday Short story is written by Anna Small. Anna writes historical romance and shares a story about two of her characters, Cassie and Jed Hazard.

If you enjoy the story, do share it on the networks.

Cassie Hazard looked out her bedroom window and blinked rapidly to clear her vision. Surely, she was dreaming, for there could not be snowflakes on the ground. Wrapping a quilt around her shoulders, she hastily left the bedroom and rushed outdoors. She gasped in delight. Speckled on the ground like shimmering dust was the first snowfall she had ever seen since arriving in the New Mexico Territory.
“I’ll bet you never expected to see snow in the desert, city gal.”
She turned around and smiled at her husband. Jed looked like a snowman himself, bundled up in a heavy coat and a muffler wound around his neck. She was grateful when he stood behind her, wrapped his arms securely around her waist, and hugged the quilt to help keep her warm.
“I didn’t know it would snow. How beautiful everything looks.” Tiny flurries of snow whipped around the horse paddock. The ground sparkled, reflecting the sunlight so she had to squint from the glare.
“It always snowed at Christmas back home. Ty and I would have snowball fights until our pa caught us avoiding our chores.” He laughed at the memory, and she turned around in his arms to face him.
“Boston will be beautiful this time of year. They have sleigh rides on the Common, and Uncle Abe always took me to the Parker House for dinner on Christmas Eve.”
“Sounds like a nice time. I hope you don’t mind cornbread for this Christmas Eve.” His head lowered and he was just about to kiss her, when someone called to them from the road. Jed glanced up. “Looks like old Busybody Ames is bringing someone out here. Maybe it’s that cattle buyer I met at the House of Diamonds a few weeks back.”
“I’ll go inside and dress,” she said, reluctantly pulling away and walking toward the door. She watched from the step for a few moments as Jed walked to the gate to let the driver in. Jed was right. The driver was Mr. Ames, the schoolteacher, and his sole passenger looked familiar. He was out of place in his black stovepipe hat and fur trimmed coat. His full white beard made her almost think of Santa Claus, except she only knew one man who wore a red silk scarf over his top coat.
Her breath caught in her throat as she tried to call Jed, to warn him, but it was too late. He’d already reached the gate, and the wagon was pulling up. Jed was talking to the two men, and he glanced a few times back at her, as did the others. She gulped, then held her head high. She had nothing to fear from anyone, and certainly not this man. She was a married woman now, for goodness’ sake, and could make her own decisions.
Jed swung the gate open and the wagon came through. She stood on the porch, her shoulders back and her chin stuck out, waiting.
The wagon stopped at the house, and Ames gave her a smug smile. He touched the brim of his hat with a slender finger. “Good morning, Mrs. Hazard.”
“Mrs. Hazard?” The old gentleman beside Ames scowled so deeply she thought his thick, bushy eyebrows would knit themselves together. He climbed off the wagon with some difficulty, and walked slowly to where she stood on the porch. “Well?” he demanded, and she felt her knees wobble, “are you not going to say hello to your own uncle, missy?”
“Hello, Uncle Abe,” she said, cursing herself inwardly for sounding like a little girl. Suddenly, she was no longer the capable rancher-woman Jed always called her, but the naughty little girl who’d painted all over her uncle’s desk and had gotten caught. “What are you doing here?”
He puffed out his chest, and cast a sardonic glance around the ranch. “I wanted to make sure you were still alive. Mr. Ames has been good enough to inform me of what shenanigans you’ve been about, young lady.”
“That’s my wife, sir. I’ll expect you to be polite in my presence,” Jed said, his voice firm but pleasant. He climbed the stairs to the porch and grasped her shoulder. “Sweetheart, let’s all go inside and have some coffee. I’m sure your uncle doesn’t want to stand outside in the cold all day.”
Grateful for Jed’s steady, practical nature, Cassie led the way into the small house, instinctively wishing she’d cleaned better the night before. But they’d had an early supper, and Jed had smiled at her in that special way that she’d foregone housekeeping in favor of their big, soft bed.
“Is this all there is?” Uncle Abe said gruffly, surveying the small house and cramped kitchen.
Jed pulled out their best chair and smiled pleasantly. “Won’t you sit, sir?”
Uncle Abe hesitated a moment, then sat down carefully, as if he were afraid the chair would break. He glowered at Cassie, but she kept up her air of strength, even though she was afraid she would settle back into the role of obedient child again.
“I came to make sure you were still alive, Cassandra,” he said, removing his hat and placing it on his knee.
“As you can see, Uncle, I am.”
Jed brought three mugs of coffee to the table and set one before Uncle Abe, then took the chair opposite him. “How was your journey, sir?”
“Long. What are your prospects with my niece? She’s my only family, and I want to make certain you are not toying with her.”
Cassie’s cheeks burned with the heat of her blush, but she bit her tongue to keep from speaking her mind. Jed’s jaw tightened, but he was polite.
“As I said before, she’s my wife. It was all done up nice and legal. Charles Ames married us a few months ago.”
One white eyebrow rose up into his forehead. “I have not heard a word about love, Mr. Hazard. Did you marry her for love, or was it a business proposition? Mr. Ames seems convinced of the latter.”
“He’s both a liar and a fool,” Jed said, pushing out of his chair and rising abruptly. He stood beside Cassie and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “I love this woman with all my heart. Yes, I wouldn’t have the ranch if she hadn’t married me, but that’s not why I did it.” He faced her now, and it was as if they were alone. She stared up into his sky blue eyes, so earnest and filled with all the hopes and dreams they both shared. “I’ve loved you from that first day, Cassie, when you walked down that dusty road and demanded I leave your ranch.” His eyes twinkled with amusement at the memory. “I wanted you then as much as I want you now. The o-nly reason I suggested we marry was that I couldn’t imagine a life without you. You’re my partner and my friend. My best and truest love.”
Her eyes filled with tears, and she placed her hand on his chest, over his beating heart. “I love you, too, Jed. I always have.”
Uncle Abe cleared his throat, then reached into his coat pocket. Cassie almost feared he was going to take out a pistol and challenge Jed to a duel, but he withdrew a fat leather pouch, which he handed to her. “In that case, you may have this.”
She hastily brushed the tears from her cheek. “What is that?”
He heaved a sigh. “My dear sister was not destitute when she ran away from home with your reprobate father. She had some money put away, and I wish you now to have it.”
“If you think you can pay me to change my mind, you’re wrong,” she said fiercely. “I don’t care if it’s a million dollars. I’m staying here. My home is with my husband.” Her limbs trembled as if she were feverish, but she kept her gaze focused on him, so he would know she spoke the truth.
“My dear child, this is not a bribe to take you out of this place, although,” and he glanced meaningfully around the room, “it could use some sprucing up. It is your inheritance. You may give it to your husband, keep it for yourself, or throw it to the wind – I don’t care what you do with it.” He rose from the table and put his hat on. “Now, if Mr. Hazard will be so kind, I require a ride back into town.”
            “What for?” Jed asked.
Uncle Abe frowned slightly. “I am not welcome here, that is evident. Cassandra and I have rarely seen eye to eye. She is happy and well; that is all I wanted to see. I’m going back to Boston at week’s end.”
He started for the door, but Cassie was quicker. She gripped his arm. “Wait.”
“Yes, my dear?” His eyes swam with tears, and she had to fight to keep her own emotions in check.
“That is why you came all the way out to New Mexico Territory? Not to persuade me to come back to Boston with you or to take the ranch from Jed or…or any of those things?”
He shook his head. “Is it so impossible that I would want your happiness, Cassandra? I am the only family you have left.”
“That’s not true,” she said softly. “I have Jed, and I have a brother, Tyler. I have Laughing Crow and Two Rivers, and Marianna and Miss Lavinia.”
He covered her hand that remained on his arm. “You are the only family I have left, Cassandra. Please, forgive an old man’s foolishness. I have always wanted your happiness. If this is what it takes, then….” He sighed, and smiled through his thick beard. “I can ask for nothing more.” He kissed her forehead, then looked at Jed. “And now, sir, if you please….”
“You’re not going anywhere,” Cassie said suddenly. “You’ll spend Christmas with us, Uncle Abe.”
“We insist,” Jed said, standing beside her.
Uncle Abe shook his hand, then embraced Cassie warmly, the long beard tickling her cheek as it always used to on the rare occasions he did show affection. She realized now that he had been too worried about keeping her safe all those years that he’d forgotten to enjoy the time they’d had.
“Well,” he said gruffly, pulling away and straightening out his coat, “if I’m to stay here, we must have a proper Christmas dinner.”
“We’re having beans, cornbread, and rabbit,” Cassie said.
Jed grinned. “And maybe some venison. Our friends, Laughing Crow and his family, will bring a deer, and our sheriff, Wade, makes the best apple pie you’ve ever tasted.”
“As I said,” Uncle Abe replied, “a proper Christmas dinner.” He removed his coat and hat and rolled up his shirtsleeves. “Get me an apron, missy. I’m going to tidy up around here so you may get ready for your friends.”
She tied her apron around his waist, her throat full of unshed, joyful tears. When she was done, he cupped her cheek in his warm hand and gave it a little pinch.
“How I’ve missed these freckles. You must come out and visit me in Boston.” He nodded at Jed. “Both of you.”
“We will.” Jed winked at Cassie as he headed for the door. “I’m going to chop some more wood and see to the livestock. I’ll come in when Laughing Crow arrives.” He paused and looked at Uncle Abe. “Merry Christmas, sir.”
“I find sir a little stuffy. Call me Uncle Abe.”
“Merry Christmas, Uncle Abe.” Jed grinned at both of them and went outside.
Cassie embraced her uncle. “Merry Christmas, dear Uncle Abe.” She kissed him on the cheek.
“Merry Christmas, Cassandra.” He indicated the table. “Are you not going to open that pouch and see how much is in there?”
She shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. I have everything I want right here.”
