PAY IT FORWARD, PAY IT BACK - FOR SIA

Hey, Kat Sheridan here, stealing Sia’s blog for the day. Well, not really “stealing”. It’s for a good
cause.

Regular readers of Over Coffee know the reason the blog is a bit dusty and cob-webby right now is because Sia McKye is dealing with breast cancer and the kill-you-to-cure-you nastiness of chemotherapy. That stuff will knock the pins out from under even the strongest person (and Sia is one of the strongest, most unrelentingly optimistic people I know!)

Cancer treatments have a lot of nasty side effects. And one of the nastiest is the over-the-moon high costs of treatment. Sia has shared some numbers with me, and I’m pretty sure we could get a beach house on Waikiki and a couple of zippy convertibles for what this costs. Sia has great insurance, but it doesn’t pay for everything. She has one more chemo treatment to go. A month of radiation (one a day, 5 days a week, for a month). A year of Herceptin (every three weeks until November). Here’s what she told me about her share so far: “I could build a finished (electricity & insulated) attached two bay garage and a new barn with my share.”

In spite of all this, Sia continues to read and post reviews on Facebook when she’s feeling well enough (and sometimes when she’s not). Sia has been a good friend to authors and bloggers from the very beginning, generous with reviews and space here on her blog. She’s paid it forward.

Now it’s time for us to pay it back.

Mutual good friend and angel-in-disguise Wendy Christy started a GoFundMe account for Sia. Yes, I’m hitting you up for something, but not necessarily money (although money would be AWESOME!) Here’s the link to Sia’s account: https://www.gofundme.com/ddnxhu8k . As you can see, she has a long way to go to make the goal.

We ALL want Sia well and back to her sassy self, right here on this blog. Here are some ways you can help (and most of them are free!)

  • Donate to her GoFundMe account. It doesn’t have to be a lot. The price of a cup of coffee. Maybe a day or a week’s profit from a book Sia featured on her blog for you. Don’t let the bigger donations already there intimidate you. $5 counts as much as $500.
  • I know many of you are bloggers with popular blogs. If you have the time, space, or inclination, please mention this GoFundMe on your own blogs. Spread the word on Facebook, Twitter, wherever you hang out in the cyberworld.
  • This one is the most important: In the comments below, offer an encouraging word to Sia. Tell her how she made a difference to you. She’s having a super rough time right now. And while you’re at it, offer a kind word to her husband, Dan, and her son, Jake, who have been awesome, amazing caretakers. I think the most comments she’s had on a blog post is around 70. Can we top that?

And the link once more for our sassy Sia: https://www.gofundme.com/ddnxhu8k

BONUS BONUS BONUS

Some of you know I write back cover copy/product descriptions for authors at my web site, BlurbCopy (http://blurbcopy.com/) From now until April 30th, 2016, if you sign up for a blurb and mention Sia in the Additional Info section of the work order, I'll give you a $5 discount (normally $35, so it will only be $30) AND I'll make a $5 donation to the GoFundMe account. Work orders must be submitted by no later than April 30th.

Hi Sia, I've thought of you many times these past months wondering how you are. I am glad you are getting to the end of the chemo, but sorry for how hard it has been for you. I am glad you have the support of your husband and son. That is so important in the battle you are going through. Thinking of you and praying that your treatment is working and that you feel better soon.

I'd helped her spread the word about the Go Fund Me earlier this month, and another blogger buddy has it in her sidebar after seeing it.
Sia, we miss you! We look forward to the day this is all behind you.

Thank you for letting us know what's happening with Sia. Sia, you are in my thoughts, hoping and praying and holding the vision that you will kick this cancer that has invaded your body. Knowing what you are going through forces me to look at my own life and get my priorities straight and my attitude adjusted to what's really important to worry about and what's not. Blessings, Sia

I think the mind has a lot of power over the body and its healing process. So, here's one grumpy old guy wishing you well and Writin' Wombat greetings from Sillycon Valley. Ypu have a big grin and healing thoughts emanating from my vector.

Hi Sia!

Sending prayers and hugs your way. Will visit the GoFundme account (and how wonderful that such a thing exists!) but my question for you is are you up for reading? I can send you a book. I think it's the only truly personal thing I can do for you besides the GoFundme account, and I feel the need to do something personal. So let me know if you can still read (that the chemo hasn't messed with your concentration ability) and I'll get this in the mail. In the meantime, persevere. This will be done and you'll be back to your sassy self in no time.

Oh my friends...Thank you so much for all the encouragement. It means more than I can say.

We found this cancer early enough that the future is good--I've put in request for another 30 years. Barring any unforseen occurances, I will be kicking the breast cancer to the curb. I've put my whole warrior goddess fighting vibe into it. My percentages are very good--93% survival rate which, no matter how you look at, it is great.

As Kat mentioned, chemo has been...tough and in particular treatment #4 and 5 because my stubborn body reacts even more wacky to it than most people do (it keeps wanting to haul me into the hospital and I hate hospitals). The week after treatment the energizer bunny deserts me and food tastes icky but much worse, my COFFEE tastes like crap. Now, that, is highly unfair, don't you think?

So, I lift my goblet pedialytes to you and thank you for encouragement and well wishes. It means so much to me...

YOLANDA, the campaigne has been godsend. It does help

HILARY, so many have had to fight this battle. I'm battling hard for supremacy. Happy Easter to you as well.

NATALIE--Thank you. I'm sorry, I just haven't had the energy to post anything here on my progress. We're almost done. Treatments are working.

ALEX--Yes, you were a big help at spreading the word and thank you so much for your loving kindness and thank you to the buddy as well. I'm looking forward to getting back to normal! Soon.

KAREN--Thank you. I think anything life threatening makes you...analyze life and your choices and letting go of what isn't important. :-)

JOHN--"The entire nation of Wombatoepeia" made me laugh. And you know that nation is very, very dear to me.

JUDI--Thank you for sharing the link and you know I've truly appreciated your unrelenting support and encouragement!

SARALEE--Thank you and giving you support has been no hardship. I enjoy your writing!

ELIZABETH--I'll take that best! :-)

BETH--hugs and thank you for the wishes for strength and healing and I like that 'bow'. Soon I will, indeed, be raising my hands in thanksgiving and joy.

KEN--I absolutely agree with you! The power of the mind is HUGE in the healing process. I felt your vibes all the way out here. They're pretty strong. :-)

DONNA--one way the chemo hasn't effected me is giving chemo brain. Reading has saved my sanity more than once since September. And it's always a joy to read your stories! I loved reading and reviewing the Professor. I'll contact your with my address. Thank you.

CAROLINE--I'm hanging and yes, I'm blessed with caring people in my life. :-)

Kat, thanks for spreading the word on behalf of Sia. She has brought so much energy to this blog and supported oh so many authors. She's been in a tough fight, but has never lost her spirit and sense of joy. Greetings to you and Sia from greater Boston, where we are watching the flowers emerge and the rains are feeding the early buds of spring.

Kat Sheridan said...

Folks, I thank you all for stopping by. And I'm grateful most of all that Sia is on the downside of the treatments and that this was caught early. Sending tons of hugs your way Sia!

Sheila Deeth said...

Hi Kat. Hi Sia. So glad to read the update and so glad you're getting through this. Wishing you all the blessings of Easter, and a wealth of energy to keep you coping.

~Sia McKye~ said...

JAMES--merci, mon cher for the kind words. Yes, it's been...unbelievably tough. Finding the joy and celebrating any successes balances that out, imo. I always figured I have choices when facing tough or difficult. I can sit and cry and moan--natural reaction--or pick myself up and walk through the fear and fight. I'd rather fight. :-) Spring has been a wonderful balm to the spirit this year. Thank you for stopping by.

KAT--You're fabulous, my friend! And you know I love hugs, thank you! This was truly a loving and kind thing to do.

SHEILA--Spring and Easter are all about renewal and hope. Thank you for the well wishes. Hugs

Hi Sia and Kat. I was away from the internet since Thursday so I'm a bit late to the party. Sia, hope you're doing better and I'm sure you're giving this terrible disease a run for its money. You keep up your strength. We miss you here. Hugs to you and your family. Also a belated Happy Easter.

Kat, thanks for all you do here and for Sia. I've posted the link to the GoFund on my sidebar.

Friends, both of you, take care.

~Sia McKye~ said...

DANA--You've been dealing with your own family issues, honey, and that needed your total focus. Don't worry about it. :-)

Yah, this is deadly serious. This happens to be one of the most agressive breast cancers and has to be hit hard and fast to stay ahead of it. That scared the crap out of me when I learned about it. Fortunately, there is a treatment breakthrough that targets this one specifically. It's increased the survival from less than 50% to what it is now. But that particular treatment is a year long battle. Daunting, to say the least.

~Sia McKye~ said...

MASON--Internet breaks are great and we all need them! Rest assured I'm shining a lazer focus on it and fully intend to squash it. I'm working hard at keeping up my strength and it hard sometimes. I can't remember ever feeling this weak and wimpy in my life. Frustrating but...as I have to keep reminding myself, it's temporary.

I'm looking forward to being able to be back on my blog and visiting the blogging community again. Right now, that's not feasible but soon. :-)

Liza said...

Sia,

I'm offering up a prayer for you that you are able to keep your strength and your positive outlook through this challenging time. Best to you.

You have such a giving heart, and it touches more people than you know. Big love for you and all your wonderful team - we are wishing you strength and solidarity as you forge ahead!

Kristen has a wonderful friend in you. I hope all that we have done has helped. It feels good to see when people walk the talk of what it means to care about someone whether it's prayer, encouraging words, or financially--and every little bit helps. :-)
